I’m a painter. I’m not trying to get out of painting.

I work by hand on a flat surface. A cloud, a grid, a boat, a stain, a painted drip, an ad from the grocery store. Things come from different places, carrying different histories and expectations. I put them together, take them apart, cover them, or leave them where they are.

Each painting begins again, though never from nothing. A grid gives way to a gesture; an accidental stain meets a faux drip; a finished surface gives way to one left open. What worked before may not work again. Sometimes a painting resembles an earlier one. Sometimes it doesn’t.

A painting can stand alone. Put another beside it and something changes. A color looks different. A familiar shape becomes strange. What seemed finished may suddenly seem unfinished.
